**CIBA** (Client Initiated Backchannel Authentication) is an extension to the traditional OpenID Connect flow. In CIBA there is a direct Relying Party(Client Application) to OpenID Provider communication without redirects through the user’s browser.

Put simply, The client application and the authentication server are on two separate devices – Decoupled . CIBA is a Decoupling Flow that decouples the client application and authentication server. The authentication server and the client application communicate via the backchannel (Server to server communication).

In CIBA, user interaction at the consumption device is not a necessity, unlike other redirection flows. CIBA itself can initiate the authentication flow for the specified user. Therefore, to authenticate, we do not need multiple browser redirects as in the case of Authorization code flow and implicit flow. 

### WHY WE NEED CIBA? {#why-we-need-ciba}
Let us understand this using an example –

For instance, you book an Uber. The cab arrives and takes you to your destination. As usual, you click on the ‘Pay using UPI’ button. It detects the UPI application on your device and redirects you to that application, let’s say Google Pay. You authenticate yourself by providing the UPI Pin and click on ‘Pay’. However, your account balance is low. Therefore, you call your friend and ask them to pay. But here the problem is we’re using a **redirect flow** i.e., as soon as you click on the ‘Pay’ button the Uber app redirects you to your banking app. Now how do you make it redirect to your friend’s app? the client application (Uber app) and the authentication server app (your friend’s Google Pay) have to be on the same device.

Now let’s consider the same scenario, but with the **decoupled flow** –

At the time of the payment, let’s suppose you are asked to enter the UPI ID. Instead of redirecting to the payment app, the UPI ID holder is notified to either make or decline the payment to the client application, Uber. In other words, there is no redirection. In this flow, you can enter your friend’s UPI and they will receive a notification like the one shown in the below image. And therefore, can make the payment using their device. Hence, as soon as the payment is done, the client application, Uber is notified. Voila!

To understand the workflow of CIBA properly, let us first look at this simplified CIBA flow image.

- **Client Application** – A third-party application that provides a service, for instance, Uber.
- **Authentication server** – The server on which end-user authentication and consent confirmation are performed, for instance, mobile phone.
- **Authorization Server** –  The server that issues the OAuth Client tokens to the client application, for instance, Google Pay Authorization Server.
- **User** – The resource owner whose interaction is needed at the authentication server, for instance, Payer

### UNDERSTANDING THE FLOW {#understanding-the-flow}

**1. Flow Initiation** – The client application and Banking Authorization server communicate via the backchannel. Therefore, the client application sends an HTTP POST request to the Banking authorization server.

**2. End-User Authentication and consent confirmation** – Upon receiving the HTTP request, the authorization server delegates the task of end-user authentication and consent confirmation to the authentication device.

**3. Issuing Tokens** – In CIBA flow, we do not need HTTP browser redirects to issue tokens to the client application because the authorization server and client application can communicate directly via the backchannel.

In CIBA, there are three flows after consent confirmation. They are called **POLL mode**, **PING mode**, and **PUSH mode**. An ID token, an access token, and optionally a refresh token are issued in every flow.

- **POLL mode** – In POLL mode, after getting a response from the backchannel authentication endpoint, **the client repeats token requests** (polling) to the token endpoint. If the process on the authentication device has not finished yet, the token endpoint returns ‘400 Bad request’ with JSON including “error”:” authorization_pending”. Therefore, the client repeats token requests until it receives the tokens or gets a time-out error.
- **PING mode** – In PING mode, the authorization server sends a notification to the **client notification endpoint** after the process on the authentication server is complete. After that, the client application makes a token request to the authorization server.
- **PUSH mode** – In push mode, when the processing on the authentication server is completed, the **authorization server generates the id_token, access_token**, and refresh_token (optional) and delivers it directly to the client notification endpoint. Therefore, the client application doesn’t need to make a token request.

### Types of Synchronization
When it comes to the categorization of synchronization techniques, one can segregate syncing into two categories i.e. **Unidirectional** and **Bi-directional**. Both of these can be further classified on the basis of **when** you want to sync your user data.   
  
- **Unidirectional Sync**  
Unidirectional synchronization or the **one-way sync**, as the name suggests, means synchronization of data between two components i.e. when user information is updated at one component, it gets updated at its linked component. Ideally in this type of synchronization, you can sync data from the source component to destination component but not vice versa. To support unidirectional sync, the source component should have the capability to send a sync request to the destination component, and the destination component should have the capability to listen and process the sync request further.

- **Bi-directional Sync**  
**I.** Bidirectional synchronization a.k.a **two-way sync**, is syncing of the corresponding user data on its counter component on the change in data on the source or destination component, in real-time or in timed bursts. To add support of a two-way sync, both components involved should have the capabilities to send a sync request as well as process a sync request.  
**II.** Talking about **when** – it clearly defines the time at which you want to synchronize your data. This can be either **Automated** and **On-demand**. Both Unidirectional Sync, as well as Bi-directional Sync, support Automated and On-demand synchronization. Depending on the requirement, the sync types can be mixed & matched to get the ideal combination suited for an existing setup of systems.

- **Automated User Sync**  
These processes occur on the basis of external triggers. It can be further classified into **Real-Time synchronization** and **Scheduled synchronization**:

- **1. Real-time synchronization**  
**I.** In the case of real-time sync, modifications in user details are simultaneously synchronized at all the components when there is an update at one component. This is achieved with the help of supported triggers and APIs of the components. As mentioned earlier, the sync can be either uni-directional or bi-directional depending on the requirement.  
**II.** Drawing parallels with consistency in distributed systems, **strong consistency** can be achieved by combining Real-time Sync with Bi-directional Sync in a way that you can perform bi-directional sync in real-time. As soon as there is a change in user details at either of the components involved, the trigger is fired and a sync request is sent to all the  integrated components.

- **2. Scheduled synchronization**  
**I.** This type of automated synchronization lets you synchronize user details at a specified time without having to compromise the user data. It acts as a scheduler for the user data to be passed on from one component to another.  
**II.** It automatically syncs the user information from one location to another irrespective of whether the user details have been updated by the user or not. This type of sync ensures regular data updates in both locations with your chosen time of comfort.  
**III.** In a setup with high transaction rates, scheduled sync might be a disadvantage since the components might return stale data when all the involved components do not have the updated data yet. This type of synchronization aims for [eventual consistency](https://hackernoon.com/eventual-vs-strong-consistency-in-distributed-databases-282fdad37cf7), rather than strong consistency.

- **On-demand Sync**  
**I.** While automated synchronization synchronizes user data more frequently, the downside of synchronizing more frequently is that you may overload your server with requests, which can pose a huge risk during business hours. This is where on-demand sync comes into the picture.   
**II.** On-demand synchronization enables you to sync your users with a click of a button at that particular instant instead of synchronization of users at the time of creation or modification. This avoids the risk of server overload which is likely to happen when a huge amount of user data is to be synced during scheduled or real-time synchronization. You can hence decide on syncing your user data at a time when the user traffic is less or when a major change needs to be propagated to all components.  
**III.** It seeks to achieve **point-in-time consistency** which deals with ensuring the uniformity of all elements of a system at a specific point in time. This prevents data loss during system crashes, improper shutdowns and other network issues.

It has consent built into its design. OpenID Connect also has its own types of flows such as implicit flow, authorization code flow, and hybrid flow, among others. 
OIDC is gaining popularity because it is newer, simple to implement, and easily accessible via APIs. It also seems to be the case that OIDC will be supported long into the future, which is why developers find it preferable to work with, compared to some of its alternatives.

 4.) **Server to Server Calls during SSO data exchange:** Unlike some traditional SSO protocols, OAuth & OpenID Connect communicate with the client on the backchannel. That is, the exchange of authorization tokens and user data happens from server to server and not via a browser. This means that unintended third parties can neither catch these server-to-server calls nor intercept the user data on the browser. This maintains data integrity and data confidentiality.

 5.) **OAuth works with SSO:** OAuth provides you with all the necessary tools and features so that it works seamlessly with Single Sign-On. Owing to its customizability, you can set custom rules and parameters on how you want it to work.

### Grant types supported by OAuth: {#grant-types}

Grant types are basically the method by which an authorization server grants you access to the necessary services. Regardless of whether you understand the technical terms listed below, you can still implement them onto your website with ease.

It provides improved security to the already reliable authorization grant and is useful for native or single-page applications. PKCE, or Proof Key with Code Exchange, implements a code verifier that verifies the authorization code sent by the server to prevent malicious misuse and access.

 3.) **Implicit Grant:** The implicit grant is similar to the authorization grant, except for two differences. It is primarily intended for use with user-agent-based clients that cannot keep the client anonymous since application code and storage are easily accessible. Additionally, the authorization server directly returns an access token.

 4.) **Password Grant:** As the name suggests, a user is required to enter a username and password to get an access token in return. This method can only be used by applications that have been created by the service itself.

 5.) **Client Credentials:** This is preferable for machine-to-machine (M2M) applications such as Command Line Interfaces (CLI), daemons, and services running in the back end. Applications use a Client ID and Client Secret to authenticate themselves and get a token to pass information between the two.

 6.) **Refresh Token:** This is used by clients to exchange a refresh token for an access token which eventually expires. The refresh token is generated based on preset parameters and allows clients to have a valid access token without constant interaction with the user.
